Presented by Artcanteen, MYO Plus Orchestra, and MQ Musical Theatre, the first Hong Kong MusicalCon 2026 proudly introduces the film “Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom” — a production by Artcanteen. This innovative event features a unique blend of “Documentary Screening x Live Performance,” reigniting the legendary narrative of Hong Kong’s first Chinese musical! Prepare for an auditory and visual feast — one that fosters a cultural dialogue spanning over half a century between music and film lovers.

Featuring the legendary Bao Bi Da as Artistic Consultant (Film), and with the renowned Andrew Tuason (disciple of the musical's original composer and great musician Joseph Koo) as Artistic Advisor and guest performer, this performance unites the MYO Plus Orchestra under the baton of Dr. Jennifer Ho, alongside guest cellist Wong Ka-lap, and vocalists Hubert Wu, Kandy Wong, Ashley Lin, and the Hong Kong Chinese University Chorus. Together, they will immerse audiences in the enchanting world of “Pai Niang Niang”.

In 1972, Ms. Rebecca Pan independently produced Hong Kong’s first Chinese musical, “Pai Niang Niang” adapting the classic tale of “The Legend of the White Snake” into a Broadway-style production that harmoniously combined traditional Chinese music with modern Western theatrical aesthetics. In 2023, miraculously recovered fragments of this lost masterpiece have been lovingly assembled by director Wong Tsui-wah into a compelling documentary. Through her lens, audiences will be transported to the premiere in 1972, witnessing firsthand the innovative genius of Ms. Rebecca Pan, the musical brilliance of Joseph Koo, and the lyrical artistry of James Wong — a testament to the unwavering dedication of a generation of artists.
